  VDL Nedcar

The origin of VDL Nedcar dates back to the 1960's when DAF (now DAF Trucks) started with the production of passenger cars in Born, Limburg, in the south of the Netherlands.
DAF First passenger car, the DAF 600. Produced at DAF Born(Nedcar).

In 1975 by the participation of Volvo Car Corporation, DAF Car BV was called Volvo Car BV. Until 2004 many Volvo models were produced successfully. In 1992, the name NedCar was introduced when Mitsubishi Motors Corporation became co-owner. This led to a unique production facility where different car brands and models are built on the same production line at the same time.
4 models on 1 line.

A cooperation agreement was signed between Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and DaimlerChrysler. Volvo subsequently sold its interest and since 2001 Mitsubishi Motors has been sole owner of NedCar; this heralded, from 2004 onwards the production of a new automotive concept in Born: the new Mitsubishi Colt and DaimlerChrysler’s smart forfour. DaimlerChrysler decided to cease production of the smart forfour, just over two years after the production of this model had started.

As of 16 December the VDL Groep from Eindhoven (the Netherlands) took over the shares of Mitsubishi. As of 1 January 2013 the name changed into VDL Nedcar and the company will build the MINI for BMW Group.

On 17th July His Majesty King Willem-Alexander officially reopened VDL Nedcar’s plant in Born. By doing this the King also launched the production of the new MINI Hatch in the Netherlands. By signing VDL Nedcar’s guest book he officially reopened the factory. What was noteworthy about this was that this book had previously been signed by his grandmother Queen Juliana in 1968 (opening of DAF Born) and his mother Queen Beatrix in 1995 (opening of the new ‘NedCar plant’). After the opening show the King and Wim van der Leegte, President of VDL Groep, got into the first MINI and drove to the employees and guests. Joost Govaarts, Director of VDL Nedcar, then handed over the keys to this MINI to Dr. Andreas Wendt, Director of BMW Group Plant Regensburg
the partner plant of VDL Nedcar in Born.

Following the acquisition of NedCar by VDL Groep at the end of 2012, a start was made on converting the car plant for the production of MINIs under contract to BMW Group. VDL Nedcar employees, along with BMW Group and various suppliers, have been working hard on this for one and a half year: from structural changes to logistical changes and the installation of new production facilities in the body shop, paint shop and the final assembly shop.

In February 2014 it was announced that the model that VDL Nedcar is to make for the BMW Group is the new MINI Hatch. This year, the MINI production volume at VDL Nedcar is anticipated to already reach a five-digit range.
